Sudan (population: 35 million), four times as big as Texas; deeply divided between the mainly Arabo-Islamic North and the African-Christianized South; desperately poor and until recently a haven for Al Qaeda terrorists. Syria has been told by the U.S. and France to remove its troops and intelligence agents from Lebanon but is a critical factor in the “road map” for Mid-East peace – no settlement is likely unless Israel and Syria agree on control of the Golan Heights. Lebanon, once part of Syria, is split between Maronite Christians descended from the crusaders, Sunni and Shia Moslems, minority groups like the Druses, and 800,000 Palestinian refugees. Twenty years of civil war that devastated Beirut ended with the TAIF agreement that mandated “power sharing” but the terrorist murders of Sunni prime minister Rafiq Hariri has re-opened old wounds and Lebanon could be facing the risk of renewed civil war. |
