Ambassador Michael Armacost
Distinguished former Ambassador and
Expert on Asia

Ambassador Michael Armacost is one of the most distinguished ambassadors of his generation. He has a wide-ranging background in Asia, both as a scholar and a government official. He will speak to us about the situation in Korea and its potential effects on the region and on American foreign policy.

During his twenty-four years in government, he served as U.S. Ambassador to Japan and the Philippines and Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs. He also held senior policy positions in the National Security Council and Department of Defense. Ambassador Armacost served as President of the Brookings Institution from 1995 to 2002. He is now the Shorenstein Distinguished Fellow at Stanford University’s Asia-Pacific Research Center and Director of the Shorenstein Forum at Stanford. Educated at Carleton College, Friedrich Wilhelms University and Columbia University, he has taught and lectured at Pomona College, Georgetown University, Johns Hopkins University and International Christian University in Tokyo.

Ambassador Armacost is the recipient of the President’s Distinguished Service Award, the Defense Department’s Distinguished Civilian Service Award, and the Secretary of State’s Distinguished Service Award. He is a member of the boards of Carleton College, the Asia Foundation, the National Committee on US-China Relations, and the American Academy of Diplomacy. He is also on the boards of directors of AFLAC, Applied Materials, Cargill and USEC, Inc; and a member of the Council on Foreign Relations and the Pacific Council on International Policy.
