Workshop for Teachers:
Turkish History, Culture and Politics

Thanks to a generous grant from the Turkish Cultural Foundation (TCF), the World Affairs Council of Orange County is proud to offer a full-day Teacher’s Workshop at Chapman University. Participants will be provided with a wide-ranging introduction to Turkey, including history, culture and politics. It will use a historical approach that will highlight the culmination of the Anatolian experience in the Turkish Republic.

After this workshop, all teachers will be invited to apply for a 10 day Study Tour of Turkey during the summer of 2010. Participating teachers will be asked to pay $600 and domestic airfare to Chicago or New York for the international flight to Turkey. All other expenses, including airfare to Turkey, lodging, food, tours, and in-country travel costs will be paid by the TCF.

Teachers Workshop Agenda
The workshop will be led by the WACOC’s former chairman, Dr. James J. Coyle, Director of Global Education, Chapman University. Dr. Coyle is an expert on Turkey who has written extensively on the country and who served at the U.S. Embassy in Ankara, Turkey from 1993 to 1995. The Training will consist of 7 hours on Turkish history, culture and politics. It will use a historical approach that will highlight the culmination of the Anatolian experience in the Turkish Republic.
9-10: Ancient History of Turkey. This section will discuss the role of the Anatolian Plateau as a crossroads of the Ancient World. It will discuss the role of the Hittites, Persians, Lycians, Greeks and Romans, and will highlight archeological traces of these civilizations that are extant in Turkey.
10-11: Byzantium: Byzantium survived the Fall of the Western Roman Empire for another thousand years. This section will discuss the role of Christianity in the development of Turkey, and the important Christian sites that remain in Turkey.
11-12: The Ottoman Empire: With the fall of Constantinople in 1452 and the rise of Istanbul, power in Anatolia changed from Christian to Muslim. This section will discuss the importance of the Empire to Turkey, the Middle East and the Balkans, as well as the decline of the empire that led to the need for a new political system: the Republic of Turkey. There will also be a discussion of the Mevlana.
12-1: Lunch. A table of traditional Turkish foods will be served to the teachers, with a discussion of Turkish recipes.
1-2: The Turkish Republic: This section will include a review of the events surrounding World War I, the defeat of the Empire and occupation by Allied forces, and the Turkish War of Independence. It will review the history of Gazi Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, the reforms he brought to the Turkish system, his thoughts on peace and international cooperation.
2-3: Modern Turkish Politics: This will be a review of the modern era, from World War II to the present. There will be an emphasis on Turkey’s efforts to join the European Union, and the modernizing reforms of the current government to achieve the goal.
3-4: Turkey and the World: There will be a review of Turkish business, its role in the transportation of energy to the West, Turkish music and literature.
