Baroness Knight of Collingtree is Vice Chair of the Conservative Peers in the
House of Lords, having previously served as a Member of the House of Commons
for 31 years. Winning every election she fought between 1966 and 1997, she represented
a constituency in England’s industrial heartland and chaired numerous House
committees on Health, Social Welfare, Home affairs and Children’s issues. She
has wide and deep experience in Foreign and Commonwealth affairs, Police and
Immigration and worked closely with prime ministers Margaret Thatcher and John
Major.
Educated
at King Edward V1 Grammar school in Birmingham, Lady Collingtree, then
Jill Knight MP., was a member of the Council of Europe and the Western European
Union from 1977 to 1988. She was re-appointed to both on
becoming a Peer of the Realm in 2000 and has since chaired the British
Inter-Parliamentary Union and headed UK delegations to international
conferences in every continent.
Queen
Elizabeth has three times honored Lady Knight -- in 1964, she received an M.B.E
for Public Services; in 1985 she was created a Dame Commander of the British
Empire (the female equivalent of a knighthood), and in 1997 was appointed as a
Life Peer. An expert on antique furniture, she pursues an active career in the
House of Lords and recently served as a lecturer on the world’s largest liner,
QM 11 where her eloquence, humor and anecdotes drew rave reviews.
