Introduction by Sir Eldon Griffiths

Baroness Knight of Collingtree is Vice Chair of the Conservative Peers in the House of Lords, having previously served as a Member of the House of Commons for 31 years. Winning every election she fought between 1966 and 1997, she represented a constituency in England’s industrial heartland and chaired numerous House committees on Health, Social Welfare, Home affairs and Children’s issues. She has wide and deep experience in Foreign and Commonwealth affairs, Police and Immigration and worked closely with prime ministers Margaret Thatcher and John Major.

Educated at King Edward V1 Grammar school in Birmingham,  Lady Collingtree, then Jill Knight MP., was a member of the Council of Europe and the Western European Union from 1977 to 1988. She was re-appointed to both on becoming a Peer of the Realm in 2000 and has since chaired the British Inter-Parliamentary Union and headed UK delegations to international conferences in every continent.

Queen Elizabeth has three times honored Lady Knight -- in 1964, she received an M.B.E for Public Services; in 1985 she was created a Dame Commander of the British Empire (the female equivalent of a knighthood), and in 1997 was appointed as a Life Peer.
